For people with visual impairments, reading is not only a way to access information, but also an important path to explore the world, learn, and grow.

However, traditional paper Braille books have long faced challenges such as high production costs, limited content availability, large size, and difficulties in carrying.

A regular book can become several thick volumes after being converted into Braille, increasing both the cost and the difficulty of access.

Finding a more convenient way for visually impaired users to read and explore knowledge has become an important challenge in accessible technology.

Starting from Real Needs: Building a “Digital Library” for Braille Readers

In 2021, while conducting user research, Angelo Li(Li Cheng) discovered the challenges faced by visually impaired people in accessing books.

A regular copy of Journey to the Center of the Earth contains only 142 pages and costs just a few dozen yuan. However, after being converted into Braille, the same book can become three thick volumes and cost several hundred yuan.

This experience inspired Angelo Li(Li Cheng)with an idea:

“Could we create a Braille Kindle, allowing visually impaired users to freely choose what they want to read?”

With this vision , Angelo Li(Li Cheng) and his team began developing a new generation of Braille display technology.

During the early stages of development, the team visited Chongqing Special Education Center and spent time with visually impaired students, attending classes with them and learning about their reading needs and daily challenges.

This experience changed the team’s understanding:

A product should not only work technically — it must truly fit the long-term needs of its users.

9 Iterations and 6 User Testing Rounds: From Prototype to Real User Experience

After completing the first prototype, Angelo Li(Li Cheng)sent the device to a visually impaired couple he knew for real-world testing.

The users shared their feedback:

“The device is convenient, and it provides access to many books. But there are still details that need improvement.”

One of the most important issues was Braille dot spacing.

For a comfortable and accurate tactile reading experience, the distance between Braille dots needs to be controlled within approximately 2.5 mm.

However, the first prototype had a dot spacing of 3 mm.

Although the device could already display Braille, the team realized that achieving a truly comfortable reading experience required further optimization.

Based on user feedback,Angelo Li(Li Cheng)and his team redesigned key structures and continued improving the technology.

After more than a year of development, the product went through:

  • 9 major design iterations
  • 6 rounds of user testing

The team eventually developed a smaller, more stable, and more user-friendly Braille display solution.

One Device, Like a Portable Braille Library

从真实需求出发,打造属于视障用户的“数字图书馆”

2021年,在一次调研过程中,郦铖了解到视障群体在阅读方面面临的困难。

一本普通的《地心游记》只有142页,价格几十元;但转换为盲文后,却可能变成厚厚三大本,价格也上涨到数百元。

这让郦铖产生了一个想法:

能不能做一款“盲文Kindle”,让视障用户也能够自由选择想阅读的内容?

带着这个目标,郦铖和团队开始了盲文点显器的研发。

研发初期,团队前往重庆市特殊教育学校进行调研,与视障学生一起学习和交流,深入了解他们在阅读和学习过程中遇到的真实困难。

这段经历让团队意识到:

产品不仅需要实现功能,更需要真正满足用户长期使用中的细节需求。

9次迭代,6次用户测试:从技术原型到真实体验

第一版盲文点显器完成后,郦铖将设备交给自己认识的盲人夫妇进行试用。

用户反馈:

“点显器很方便,里面有很多书籍可以阅读,但还有一些细节需要优化。”

其中,一个关键问题是盲文点位间距。

为了获得更好的触摸阅读体验,盲文两个点之间的距离需要控制在约 2.5mm以内

而第一版产品的点距为 3mm,虽然能够实现基本阅读,但仍无法达到最佳体验。

根据这些真实反馈,团队决定重新优化产品结构和核心技术。

经过一年多持续研发,产品经历:
