For many years, visually impaired readers have faced challenges including limited accessible content, difficulties in obtaining Braille materials, and high reading costs.

Traditional Braille books are often bulky and difficult to carry. While audiobooks provide another way to access information, they cannot fully replace tactile reading.

It was through an unexpected encounter that Angelo Li (Li Cheng), a student at Chongqing University, began exploring these challenges and searching for a better solution.

From a Meaningful Encounter to the Idea of a “Braille Kindle”

In 2021, during a technology innovation research program , Angelo Li (Li Cheng) met a visually impaired couple.

When he saw their home filled with Braille books, he said:

“You have so many books.”

But their response surprised him:

“This entire bookshelf is actually just one book.”

The conversation deeply affected Angelo Li (Li Cheng).

For the first time, he realized that reading resources easily available to most people could become a luxury for visually impaired users.

After returning to campus, while seeing classmates using electronic readers such as Kindle, Angelo Li (Li Cheng) began thinking:

“Could we create a Braille Kindle for visually impaired people, allowing them to freely choose what they want to read?”

From Campus Innovation to Accessibility Technology Entrepreneurship

At the end of 2022, Angelo Li (Li Cheng)and his teammates officially launched their Braille e-book project.

To truly understand user needs, the team visited special education schools and spent time communicating with visually impaired students and experiencing their learning environments.

This experience changed their original perspective.

At first, they simply wanted to complete an innovative project.

However, after engaging with visually impaired users, they gradually realized:

The team continued designing, testing, and improving the product.

After completing the first prototype, they invited visually impaired users to test it and collected feedback.

To achieve a better reading experience, the team made the difficult decision to redesign the core technology from the ground up.

Through continuous research and development, Angelo Li (Li Cheng)and his team gradually established their own technology system.

一本普通的《地心游记》只有142页,价格几十元;但对于视障人士而言,转换成盲文后,却可能变成厚厚的三大本,价格也上涨到数百元。

长期以来,视障群体在阅读方面面临着内容有限、获取困难、成本高昂等问题。传统盲文书体积大、不易携带,而听书虽然能够帮助获取信息,却无法完全替代触觉阅读。对于公式、乐谱、专业资料等复杂内容,盲文仍然是不可替代的信息表达方式。

正是一次偶然的经历,让重庆大学学生郦铖开始关注这一群体的真实需求。

从一次相遇,到一个“盲文Kindle”的想法

2021年,在一次科创活动调研中,郦铖认识了一对盲人夫妇。

当他看到家中摆满盲文书籍时,感叹:“你们有这么多书。”

但对方告诉他:

“这一整个书架,其实只是一本书。”

这句话深深触动了郦铖。

他第一次意识到,对于普通人而言随手可以获得的阅读资源,对于视障人士来说却可能是一种奢侈。

回到学校后,看着同学们使用 Kindle 等电子阅读设备,郦铖产生了一个想法:

能不能做一款属于视障人士的“盲文Kindle”,让他们也能够自由选择想阅读的内容?

从校园创新,到无障碍科技创业

2022年底,郦铖和伙伴正式启动“盲文电子书”项目。

为了真正理解用户需求,团队走进特殊教育学校,与视障学生交流、体验他们的学习生活。

这段经历改变了团队最初的想法。

最开始,他们只是希望完成一个创新项目;但在真正接触视障用户后,他们逐渐认识到:

这不仅是一款产品,更是一种帮助视障人士获得独立学习和生活能力的工具。

团队不断进行设计、测试和迭代。第一版产品完成后,他们邀请视障用户体验,并根据反馈重新优化核心技术。

为了达到更好的阅读体验,团队甚至选择推倒已有方案,从零开始重新研发。

用自主技术降低无障碍设备门槛

经过持续研发,郦铖带领团队逐渐建立起自主技术体系。

围绕盲文显示模块、数字内容转换以及智能终端应用,无界启航持续探索更加小型化、低成本、高体验的无障碍设备。

目前,团队已经推出:

创业过程中,郦铖以第一发明人身份申请发明专利7项、实用新型专利2项、软件著作权1项,获得国家级奖励6项、省市级奖励6项。

他的创业项目获得重庆两江新区明月湖智能产业科创基地支持,并完成早期融资,公司估值达到2000万元。
